Tahtomatta mitään
Kassandra: ”No – toiminko muka väärin?
Solon: ”Juuri näin – kompromissi on yleensä paras ratkaisu.
Tuleeko minusta gaselli, jonka niskaan leijona upottaa hampaansa verenhimossaan?”
Olet inhimillinen luonnonvoima, jonka kaikki tunnustavat.
English translation:
Without wanting anything
Cassandra: “No—how am I supposed to have done wrong? If I notice something amiss, am I not even allowed to speak of it?”
Solon: “You were right, but you acted arrogantly. Being right does not grant you the right to treat others poorly. With authority comes responsibility, which must be cultivated with a gentle hand.”
Cassandra: “Thank you for closing the door and thus forcing me to learn. Power goes to my head easily. That is why I asked to learn humility—thank you for teaching me.”
Solon: “To whom much has been given, much shall also be required.”
Cassandra: “I understand. I understand completely. Let this, then, be a lesson to me—even hated and misunderstood, I shall retain my respect and my humility. I will not begin to hate, nor will I lose my self-control. I will take the other perspective into account even as I present my own, and I will not hold one above the other.”
Solon: “Precisely so—compromise is often the best solution. It cannot arise unless the hierarchy of values is neutral. At times, one must step down in order to find mutual understanding.
If you wish to be the ‘Sun,’ you must desire nothing. The desire to be right is itself part of desire—relinquish that as well, even if you do not act from ego.”
Cassandra: “If I no longer desire anything, what position will that leave me in? Will I become a doormat for others to wipe their feet upon? Will I become a gazelle, with a lion sinking its teeth into my neck in its thirst of blood?”
Solon: “The closer you are to nothing, the closer you are to everything. No one can direct hatred, indifference, or destruction toward that—for then there is no longer any object to which it can be directed, but only a pure phenomenon of nature.
How could a lion ever kill a hurricane, or a human being stamp their feet against a volcanic eruption, or anyone touch the vacuum of space?”
Cassandra: “Is this the direction in which I am striving? To exist so powerfully and so expansively that everything human pales beside what I represent?”
Solon: “You use a poor choice of words, but your thought is correct. The human does not pale beside you, but becomes part of your breast. You are a human force of nature, acknowledged by all. No one will set themselves against you any longer, because there will no longer be anyone against whom to set oneself—you simply exist without will, in harmony with all that is, to the best of your ability, as part of that order which nothing can ever disturb.
Earn your life,
And earn your fate.”
Cassandra: “You understand how much this hurts me, do you not? You understand that in sacrificing my will, I am sacrificing my own life?
I force myself to do what I consider impossible—to overcome my fears, to humiliate myself for the sake of growth, to be a madman in the eyes of everyone. I am even willing to die for the sake of the highest good toward which I strive—
In return, I receive only hatred, mistreatment, discrimination, and the endless feeling of being an outsider.
I receive all this despite knowing, in the deepest part of my being, that what I am doing is right.”
Solon: “The narrow path is a strange one to walk, but alone it may lead you out of darkness. The Sun has no one, yet it is capable of creating all the life we know. Space has nothing, yet there all things live.
Whoever sacrifices their life for the sake of this ideal, shall find life.”
